What is 1in8B?

1in8B, or “one in 8 billion”, explores the idea of one life among eight billion. This edition brings together birth probabilities and reference data for 172 countries with a free browser life simulation. Read about a country’s circumstances, then follow a character through the years and make decisions at events. No download or account is needed.

in8b.com is the 1in8B official British English website for this birth-odds and country-data edition.

In the 1 in 8 billion game, follow one life through the years and decide how to respond at its turning points. One in 8 billion begins with circumstances you do not choose; the events, your decisions and the moments you keep form this character’s story.

Country data explorer

Start with United Kingdom: a closer look, compare living conditions and opportunities in Ireland and Australia, or browse all country baselines. Population, births, health and education are explained alongside the data's limitations.

Put the birth certificate's odds in context

A country's share is its annual births or population, according to this life's draw mode, divided by the corresponding total in the dataset. The certificate turns that share into an approximate one-in-N figure. It describes the chance of drawing a birthplace in this model, rather than recreating every detail of one child. Each new life is another draw, so returning to the same country is possible.

Read the four states with the timeline

Health, Joy, Mind and Bonds show the character's game state as it changes. Look at a focus option's effect hints before choosing it; study, work and time with friends can make different trade-offs. Open the profile to read the country indicators alongside the story. A high score promises no particular ending, and a national average cannot serve as a personal forecast.

How birthplace weights work

1in8B draws from a dataset covering 172 countries. Annual births supply the default weights; before a new life, you can instead choose population weights from the same dataset. Both modes start at age 0, and countries do not have equal 1-in-172 chances. These are the simulation's probabilities, rather than a calculation of your personal chance of being born somewhere.

Choose your own pace

Read the birth certificate, then choose a focus as life moves forward. You can answer event choices yourself or enable automatic choices. Adjust the speed, pause to catch up with the timeline and star favourite moments. The character profile adds context, and the life summary gathers the outcome when the story ends.

Read the story alongside the numbers

Country statistics provide a background for the simulation; decisions and random events affect what happens within it. National averages cannot account for every individual. A simulated lifespan or cause of death is a game result, not a forecast of your health, income or future.

Data sources and limits

The data notes cite UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank World Development Indicators (WDI). Complete reference years and original values are not recorded for every indicator, so figures are not guaranteed to be current or to match the databases’ present values. The links below explain the indicators and original statistics; they do not verify every game value.

Source databases

The existing baseline draws on UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank development indicators, among other public statistics. It combines different reference years; individual observation years and estimation flags were not retained. Consult the original series before using these figures for research or current decisions.

Before you begin

What does one in eight billion mean in 1in8B?

The name suggests one person among eight billion. This is a storytelling scale, rather than a live population count or a one-in-eight-billion chance for each country. Birthplace probabilities use annual births or population weights from the 172-country dataset.

Can I choose my country of birth?

No. You can choose weights based on annual births (the default) or population, but you cannot select a particular country. Each new life is another draw and may begin in the same country.

Can I play on the 1 in 8 billion website without downloading or registering?

Yes. You are on the official 1in8B website. Return to the game area at the top of the page to begin a life. You can play for free in your browser, without downloading an app or creating an account.

Can I return to an unfinished life?

Yes, when browser storage is available. Saves for unfinished lives belong to this browser and website and do not sync to other browsers or devices. Clearing site data can remove them. You can separately choose to keep the record of a completed life in the cloud, but it cannot be used to continue an unfinished life on another device.

What changes when I switch language?

The game supports 24 language options. Life history and cause of death translate too, and the current life continues rather than restarting.
