The honest engine

How the life model is built, measured, and kept answerable — the companion to the methods page.

Before any story, a census

The engine does not begin with drama; it begins with a census. Country tables of births, incomes, schooling and health lay the ground a life stands on. Before the first sentence of any story, the numbers must already be true — and be the same numbers tomorrow.

Same seed, same life

Every life is drawn from a seed. Run the same seed and you get the same life, down to the crooked signature on the school certificate. That determinism is not a technical nicety: it is what makes the game checkable. A story that can be replayed exactly is a story that can be audited.

The replays that never lie

Thousands of seeded lives run on every change, and a battery of regressions guards each rule the engine follows — the order of a night, the arithmetic of a house, the exact shape of a certificate. When a new card touches the shared stream of chance, the sweeps widen and run again. Nothing ships on a maybe.

Measured, then published

The methods page quotes an engine with a hash, and the hash changes when the model does. When it changes, thousands of lives are re-run and the model is measured again before publication. The site would rather be a day late than quietly different.

Original by design

Every string here is written here — in twenty-five languages, checked against other sites’ words by an automated sweep before anything ships. Not because borrowing is hard to detect, but because a site about real lives should not paraphrase anyone else’s.

The engine stops where the data stops

The engine knows what it does not know. Where a country’s tables have no single language, the site prints none; where the model keeps no statistic, the certificate says so instead of inventing one. An honest engine’s final feature is the boundary it admits.
