The reading room

A thousand lives

The story of this site’s first thousand lives.

One in eight million

The site began with a question you already knew the answer to: if eight billion people are alive today, what were the odds of being born exactly where you were? The game is that question, made playable.

The first lives

The first version was one page, two buttons, and a single honest table of births. People played it all night. Saves stayed on their own devices, because there was nowhere else to put them.

What the world gives you

A birthplace is drawn with the weights the world itself reports — births, not players. Every odds line says where its numbers come from, on the spot.

The keepsakes

Players asked to keep something of a finished life. The answer grew slowly: a shelf, a film, a page of remembrance — all local, all theirs, nothing uploaded.

A thousand lives later

By the thousandth life in a single browser, the game had grown to twenty-five languages and a reading room. This page is part of the same answer: a site can tell its own story plainly.
